Written Words – An Evening Out

I watch as we each arrive
evidence of drifting only apparent to a watchful eye
in between institutions

school in the past
family in the future

drifting from job to city to bar
as if something along the way might catch us

I know because I live here

it’s the smallest of things:
a tiny breath before entering a room
a clenched jaw as a group breaks into friends
remnants of nervousness
like fingernails chewed to the stub
or a foot still tapping unconsciously

a paradox
a generation of lonely people interacting
and I keep looking for an answer

but maybe it’s as simple
as smiling
and saying hello
