While out swing dancing tonight, I heard the story of a particular recording of the song “Mack the Knife.” During her live recording in Berlin, Ella Fitzgerald completely forgot the words to the second verse. Check out the recording, and start paying close attention about 1:45 in, when the words desert her. Rather than call it quits, she makes up her own lyrics, tells the audience the few words she remembers, and transitions into scat and tributes to other performers known for the song. She finishes with flair and won a Grammy for the performance. There’s got to be a lesson in there somewhere.
