Found Words – Hank Stuever

Best sentence I read today:

By this point, “Hemingway and Gellhorn” has become a movie for people who love old bookstores but perhaps don’t own very many books.

Found Words/Found Music – Cloud Cult

May 15, 2012

“You were born into a strange world.
Like a candle, you were meant to share the fire.
I don’t know where we come from, and I don’t know where we go.
But my arms were made to hold you, so I will never let you go.
Cuz you were born to change this life.
You were born to chase the light.
You were born…”

-You Were Born

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.”

This is crazy, but I know I left you to be with your art
You always put me first, and somehow that broke my heart
It’s not my place to choose, my first love and my only muse

Found Music/words — Korngold

February 9, 2012

This is an aria from Erich Korngold’s opera Die Tote Stadt (the City of the Dead), and it is beautiful poetry even more powerfully set.

Here is a translation (thank you Hank Hammert, although with some revisions).

My longing, my delusion,
It brings back my dreams.
In the dance I once obtained it,
Now I’ve lost my happiness.

While dancing on the Rhein
in the moonlight,
she confessed to me, in her blue eyes an intimate glance.

Confessed to me with her pleading words:
O stay, don’t go far away,
preserve your homeland
peaceful, thriving, happy.

My longing, my delusion,
It brings back my dreams.
The magic of things far away
throws a brand into my soul
The magic of the dance lured me,
and I was then Pierrot.
I followed her, my wonderful sweetheart,
and learned under tears to kiss.
Ecstasy and misery,
Delusion and happiness:
Ah, this is a clown’s destiny.

My longing, my delusion,
It brings back my dreams.

What’re you so afraid of?
Why you feelin’ scared?
What’s the worst that’s gonna happen?

Standin’ in the moonlight
I can tell you feel doomed
Though nothin’ is wrong no nothin’

You say maybe a crane will fall from the sky
maybe a dove will dive and die before your eye

It’s too early to say it’s too early to say goodnight . . . goodnight
It’s too early to read it’s too early to read by the firelight

What’re you so afraid of?
Why you feelin’ scared?
What’s the worst that’s gonna happen?

Standin’ in the meadow
with sunlight in your eye and a sense of so much sorrow

You say maybe a plane will fall from the sky
maybe your lover will lie and die before your eye

It’s too early to say it’s too early to say goodnight . . . goodnight
It’s too early to read it’s too early to read by the firelight

-Never Be Daunted, heard in “HappyThankYouMorePlease”
