Found Words – Jerry Seinfeld

“You know I tell ya, I gotta say, I’m enjoying adulthood. For a lot of reasons and I’ll tell you reason #1. If I want a cookie, I have a cookie, OK. I have 3 cookies or 4 cookies or 11 cookies if I want. Many times I will intentionally ruin my entire appetite. Just ruin it. And then I call my mother up right after to tell her that I did it. Hello, Mom, yeah I just ruined my entire appetite. Cookies!”

Found Music – Stars

November 29, 2008

I think it’s pretty cool when music you used to love (but got tied up in a girl) can come back around with new meaning. Ian, you’re the man for bringing this back like its in style. Here’s the jam that got me hooked. And here’s the myspace.

And they were awesome live.

Written Words – Thanksgiving

November 27, 2008

So last year for NIM I wrote a thanksgiving poem for our service about how we shouldn’t just thank God for the good things, but also everything else. I called it my new Thanksgiving day tradition. Still trying to figure out a way to get that audio up, but here’s my thank yous:

  • For not feeling well (and having friends around to pick me up)
  • For the latest basketball loss (and the way my teammates rallied)
  • For the headache from the Skype glare (and for keeping in touch with so many important people – and even getting a hand of pinochle in)
  • For the back surgery I had a year and a half ago (and the fact that I’m pain free now)
  • For being out of the country for Thanksgiving (and getting to share in other people’s Thanksgiving traditions)
  • For not having the day off (and the other awesome academic opportunities here every day)
  • For being behind in my work (and being blessed with a mind that will allow me to make it up)
  • For a best friend who “couldn’t organize a piss up in a brewery” (and the fact that despite it all he’s still coming to visit me)

And, of course, a special thanks to my friends and family.

(feel free to add your own)

Written Words – (a little) faith

November 23, 2008

Thoughts from evening mass:

I spend a lot of time “trying to do the right thing.” Stressing about it. Praying about it. Working hard for it. And that’s made ever more complicated by the fact that the “right thing” is often not clear. Gray. Confusing.

Sometimes it’s necessary just to step back and say: I’m trying. That’s got to be worth something. The fact that I want to do God’s will. I want to get it right. I’m willing to sacrifice to do that. Even if I’m not wise enough to know what it always is.

Have you ever seen an idealist
With grey hairs on his head
Or successful men who keep in touch
With unsuccessful friends?

You only think you do
I could have sworn I saw it too
But as it turns out,
It was just a clever ad for cigarettes

Cause if it isn’t making dollars
Then it isn’t making sense
If you aren’t moving units
Then you’re not worth the expense
